In the Perilous Adventures Warbands Guide (PAWG), spells are your arcane arsenal—tools to sear foes, mend wounds, or twist the battlefield in a brutal world. Whether you’re a novice caster or a seasoned mystic, this list offers everything from faint glows to shattering blasts. We use the d100 system: roll two ten-sided dice (one for tens, one for units) under your Spellcasting skill minus the spell’s Difficulty—lower beats the odds! Our warband—Torren, Lira, Eryn, Kael, and Veyra—shows how it works with examples and math. Pick your spells wisely, and unleash the power within!


How Spells Work

  • Basics: Spells draw Mana from your Pool (WIS + INT), challenge your Spellcasting skill against a Difficulty, and deliver a punch—damage, healing, or utility. Roll d100 under your target (skill - Difficulty).
  • Success: Spend full Mana, gain the effect.
  • Failure: Lose half Mana (rounded down), nothing happens.
  • Critical Success: Roll 01-05—doubles the effect or adds a bonus (GM’s call).
  • Critical Failure: Roll 96-00—wastes Mana, risks a mishap.
  • Examples: Eryn (Spellcasting 90, Mana 170) and Kael (Spellcasting 100, Mana 150) show the math below.

Utility Spells

Echo Sense

  • Mana Cost: 8
  • Difficulty: 35
  • Effect: Hear within 30 ft for 10 minutes—cuts through darkness. Grants +20 to Perception for movement.
  • Flavor: A ripple paints the air with sound, keen as a bat’s echo.
  • Math Example: Kael (target 100 - 35 = 65) rolls 40—hears foes, Mana drops to 142. Rolls 70—fails, Mana to 146.

Light Orb

  • Mana Cost: 5
  • Difficulty: 30
  • Effect: A floating orb lights 20 ft (dim to 40 ft) for 10 minutes, moves 10 ft per round (Free Action).
  • Flavor: A gentle glow blooms, chasing shadows like a tiny star.
  • Math Example: Eryn (target 90 - 30 = 60) rolls 20 (Margin 40)—lights up, Mana to 165. Crit (05)—lasts 20 minutes?

Mend

  • Mana Cost: 8
  • Difficulty: 40
  • Effect: Repairs a small object (up to 10 lbs) or seals cracks (e.g., armor regains 5 DR) in 1 minute.
  • Flavor: Power stitches steel, whispering wholeness into broken things.
  • Math Example: Kael (target 100 - 40 = 60) rolls 50—fixes a dagger, Mana to 142.

Message

  • Mana Cost: 6
  • Difficulty: 35
  • Effect: Whisper a message (25 words) to a known person within 1 mile; they reply once. Thick barriers block it.
  • Flavor: Your voice rides the breeze, a secret on unseen wings.
  • Math Example: Eryn (target 90 - 35 = 55) rolls 30—sends a warning, Mana to 164.

Detect Aura

  • Mana Cost: 10
  • Difficulty: 50
  • Effect: Sense magic or presences within 30 ft for 1 minute. WIS + Spellcasting vs. concealment (GM sets).
  • Flavor: Your gaze pierces the veil, shimmering with hidden truths.
  • Math Example: Kael (target 100 - 50 = 50) rolls 40—senses a shard, Mana to 140.

Combat Spells

Fire Bolt

  • Mana Cost: 10
  • Difficulty: 40
  • Effect: Hurls fire (60 ft) for 20 damage. Crit ignites flammables.
  • Flavor: Flames leap forth, a searing vow of ruin.
  • Math Example: Eryn (target 90 - 40 = 50) rolls 20 (Margin 30)—20 damage, Mana to 160.

Frost Shard

  • Mana Cost: 12
  • Difficulty: 45
  • Effect: Icy spike (50 ft), 15 damage, slows (-10 ft Movement, 3 rounds) unless CON + Endurance (Difficulty 50) resists.
  • Flavor: Winter howls from your grasp, chilling to the bone.
  • Math Example: Kael (target 100 - 45 = 55) rolls 50—15 damage + slow, Mana to 138.

Shock Grasp

  • Mana Cost: 8
  • Difficulty: 35
  • Effect: Touch deals 10 electric damage, stuns (miss next turn) unless CON + Resilience (Difficulty 40) resists.
  • Flavor: Sparks dance at your touch, eager to bind.

Stone Spike

  • Mana Cost: 15
  • Difficulty: 50
  • Effect: Rock spike (30 ft), 25 damage; DEX + Acrobatics (Difficulty 50) halves damage. Needs ground.

Thunderclap

  • Mana Cost: 15
  • Difficulty: 50
  • Effect: Boom (20 ft radius), 10 damage, stuns (1 round) unless CON + Resilience (Difficulty 50) resists. Affects all.
  • Flavor: A roar rends the air, breaking wills with its echo.

Defensive Spells

Shielding Aura

  • Mana Cost: 10
  • Difficulty: 40
  • Effect: +20 to defense rolls or 10 DR (choose) for 3 rounds.

Blur

  • Mana Cost: 15
  • Difficulty: 50
  • Effect: Foes take -20 to hit you for 5 rounds; ends if you attack.

  • Math Example: Eryn (target 90 - 50 = 40) rolls 30—foes falter, Mana to 155.

Frost Armor

  • Mana Cost: 12
  • Difficulty: 45
  • Effect: 10 DR, 5 cold damage to melee attackers (5 rounds). Melts in heat.
  • Flavor: Ice crusts your skin, a frigid shield with bite.
  • Math Example: Kael (target 100 - 45 = 55) rolls 40—10 DR, Mana to 138.

Counter Ward

  • Mana Cost: 15 (or 5 as Reaction)
  • Difficulty: 50 (or caster’s roll as Reaction)
  • Effect: Negates a spell targeting you or an ally (10 ft). Reaction costs 5 Mana, rolls vs. caster’s result.
  • Flavor: Your will snaps magic mid-flight, a shield of defiance.
  • Math Example: Eryn (Reaction vs. foe’s 60, rolls 40)—stops it, Mana to 165.

Iron Skin

  • Mana Cost: 18
  • Difficulty: 55
  • Effect: 15 DR for 5 rounds, -10 DEX rolls due to stiffness.
  • Flavor: Flesh turns to iron, unyielding as stone.
  • Math Example: Kael (target 100 - 55 = 45) rolls 30—15 DR, Mana to 132.

Healing and Support Spells

Healing Touch

  • Mana Cost: 15
  • Difficulty: 50
  • Effect: Heals 40 HP (touch); crit removes 1 Fatigue.

Vigor Surge

  • Mana Cost: 10
  • Difficulty: 40
  • Effect: Ally (30 ft) gains +20 to next roll, +10 ft Movement (3 rounds).
  • Flavor: Energy surges, quickening their step and spirit.
  • Math Example: Eryn (target 90 - 40 = 50) rolls 40—ally boosted, Mana to 160.

Cleanse

  • Mana Cost: 12
  • Difficulty: 45
  • Effect: Removes one condition (e.g., Bleeding) from a touched target; roll vs. condition strength (default 50).
  • Flavor: Impurities flee, purged by your touch.
  • Math Example: Kael (target 100 - 45 = 55) rolls 50—condition gone, Mana to 138.

Group Mending

  • Mana Cost: 25
  • Difficulty: 70
  • Effect: Heals 20 HP to all allies in 20 ft (1-minute cast).
  • Flavor: Renewal ripples out, a balm for every scar.
  • Math Example: Eryn (target 90 - 70 = 20) rolls 15—20 HP each, Mana to 145.

Renewal Pulse

  • Mana Cost: 15
  • Difficulty: 50
  • Effect: Heals 30 HP +10 to next defense roll (30 ft).

Warband Examples

  • Torren: Mana 0—no spells, pure steel.

Math Examples

  • Eryn’s Frost Shard: Target 90 - 45 = 45, rolls 40—15 damage + slow, Mana to 158.
  • Kael’s Overcast Group Mending: Target 100 - 70 = 30, rolls 20—20 HP each, 5 Mana left, deficit 20 = 4 Fatigue (-40 rolls), Mana to 0.

For Experienced Players

  • Tactics: Low Difficulty (Light Orb, 30) shines—Kael’s target 70 rarely fails. High Mana spells (Group Mending, 25) pack a punch—Eryn’s clutch heal.
  • Synergy: Channeler’s Focus (-10 Difficulty)—Eryn’s Fire Bolt target 60. Crits (01-05)—Healing Touch at 80 HP?
  • Mana Play: Eryn’s 170 = 11 Healing Touches—manage it or overcast for big wins.
