Excellent solution! I had a user come in this morning with this problem and after hours of failed solutions and internet searches, this fixed the problem.

We also use Casper to manage systems, so I'm not sure if that's a common factor to this problem.

Same for me too --

On my bad system, it looks like this:
ls -l /var/audit/current

ls: /var/audit/current: Invalid argument
lrwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 0 17 Mar 22:01 /var/audit/current

Which basically means it is a corrupt symbolic link.

It seems to me that one of the Disk Repair or Repair Permissions routines should have found and fixed this…

Should look like this:
ls -l /var/audit/current

lrwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 40 9 Mar 14:26 /var/audit/current -> /var/audit/20120309142654.not_terminated

After removing the file and rebooting all my users could once again log into the system.

It would be nice to know how this file got corrupted!

What spanking timing, Shawn G. You saved the day! This happened to me this morning and I was prepared to reinstall. I can confirm that removing the file called "current" worked and I was able to startup and login without any problems.

I booted from the recovery disk (hold Command-R while powering on) and selected the disk called "Recovery".
From the menu click on Tools -> Terminal, this opens up a shell window.

The name of the disk I installed Lion on is "rootdisk". If you don't know your disk name, you should be able to see it once you're in the /Volumes directory. I followed the steps from Shawn G (the # is the prompt, don't type that):

# cd /Volumes
# ls
rootdisk

# cd /Volumes/rootdisk/var/audit
# ls -la current
-r--r----- 1 root wheel 11351 Oct 14 2010 current

Its not a symlink! Whack that thing and reboot:

# rm current
# reboot

For anyone else having this issue, I believe I have figured out a quick and easy fix. You need to gain access to the OS either through SSH from another box, by booting in Single User or through target disk mode. Check the /var/audit folder and look for a file named "current". This is supposed to be a symbolic link to the latest file in the folder, however on every machine I have seen with this infliction it is actually just a regular file. If you delete this file (Remember to remount / as RW if you are in single user mode) you can then reboot the system and log in normally. There is nothing else you need to do to resolve this.

In my case, the file was introduced by mistake through the use of JAMF Casper to deploy software to a workstation.
