Computer problems, continued

My computer continues to reboot randomly with graphic anomalies and repeating sounds. So far I have tried the following:

  1. Tested the machine with both the Creative X-Fi installed and not.
  2. Tested the machine with a different PSU.
  3. Run memcheck on the machine twice with 4GB RAM installed, and then swapped the 2 pairs and tested several times.
  4. Tried Windows Vista 64 and Windows 7.
  5. Replaced the nVidia GTS 8800 (640MB) SLI setup with an ATI Radeon 4890.
  6. Installed the whole rig into a new case (Coolermaster HAF 932). Quieter and cooler – but still getting the reboots.

I’m stumped. I hope it’s not the motherboard but that been suggested as a possible cause. Any other ideas?

  1. Are you running Time Machine backups?

There is/was a bug when writing time machine backups to a corrupted drive that would cause the client machine to crash – nasty and ugly, but easily fixed by disabling time machine, verifying the drive, then re-enabling.

I’m assuming you replaced the PS with one that was a higher wattage in case you were pulling too much power? Were the windows installs new installs or current?
Also, are you running RAID? Is there a possibility of heat issues affecting other components that could be crashing? I know that office you’re in gets hot.

  2. No RAID, and I tried a different PSU. I turned off automatic rebooting after STOP errors and I am getting 0X1E and 0x7E errors. I think it may be driver errors or the motherboard.
