Hey mindflayer, I have actually recently looked into buying a new keyboard gearing to handle my gaming. I wasn't really requiring it to have backlit keys, but i definitely needed to have multimedia keys that i could launch my programs, and also mask with itunes so that i could control the volume and have forward / back song keys along with pause and play. After just browsing around at Office Max i ran into a relatively cheap (my kinda keyboard) Logitech Multimedia Access Keyboard 600 http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/keyboards/keyboard/devices/2996&cl=us,en
it has a great feel close to a laptops keys but much more sturdy. I'm enjoying mine, hope you find yours
