iPhoto and iCore Duos

I’ve gotten the chance to play with iPhoto both on a iMac Core Duo and my own G5 dual 2Ghz. The former is surprisingly snappy, especially considering it’s a consumer-level machine. The performance is such that I am really itching to sell my Powerbook and pick up a MacBook Pro, but I really ought to wait until Photoshop is ported. On the desktop, the urge is less, since the G5 screams through Photoshop and iPhoto – though I do use iView Multimedia Pro for most of my cataloging.

Bare Feats has some interesting test data comparing the Core Duo iMac to the single core, dual processor G5 2Ghz with the X800 XT. On Universal Binaries, the Core Duo is fast, while with PowerPC-compiled apps, the G5 just runs away. That performance hit on the Intel chips is to be expected under Rosetta emulation, but it does promise superb performance with whatever Apple has up its sleeve for the Mac towers. I have to wonder if they will be going with the 64-bit Merom chip, or something else. The last few years have been hallmarked with evolutionary steps in speed and features on the Pro machines. Now it’s come time for the revolution….
